Dear Friends and Colleagues:
I am announcing my candidacy to become the next Supervisor for District 9 in San Francisco. District 9 includes most of the Inner Mission, Bernal Heights and the Portola neighborhoods. I am asking for your endorsement, volunteer time and financial support. There is no incumbent in this race it is time for a new beginning. I am running on my over twenty-five year track record as a San Francisco community organizer on issues related to labor, development, jobs, women, LGBT, seniors, public safety, health, immigration and the environment.
Through my years of involvement in community issues I have had the privilege of working with you and many of your colleagues. It is my hope that as our paths have crossed you have been able to judge the strength of my character and the value of my word and actions.
Most of you have seen my work and on whose behalf I have labored:
For over ten years I was Project Director for the San Francisco Latino Voter Registration & Education Project.
- For five years I served as a San Francisco Democratic Party Field Organizer.
- San Francisco Labor Council delegate for twelve years.
- I have worked on numerous local, state, and national political campaigns, including:
- Presidential campaigns of Hilary Clinton, John Kerry, Al Gore, Bill Clinton, Jesse Jackson
- United Farm Workers (UFW) Anti Pesticide campaign
- Mayoral campaigns of Art Agnos and Willie L. Brown
- Project Director for San Francisco Labor/Neighbor Program
- Proposition 89/Californians For Fair Elections
- Keep the De Young in the Park campaign
- Keep Cesar Chavez Street/ No on O campaign
I met many of you through my work with the United Farm Workers where I was the Regional Manager for twelve years. I subsequently became the Development Director of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. I cannot express enough my gratitude to Dolores Huerta for the lessons she has taught me in my twenty plus years of service to the UFW and its allies.
Despite great encouragement from many in the community, I did not come to my decision to run for the open seat in District 9 lightly. We need to bring all District 9 stakeholders into the dialogue about our future.
In District 9, the public's safety is at risk through daily violence. The most vulnerable of our community, children and the elderly, need to be more aggressively protected and their safety guaranteed when they walk the streets of their neighborhoods.
Public safety issues imperil not only the residents but also our small business community. For far too long, Mission's small business growth has been neglected, reasonable opportunities for growth have been lost and job growth continues to suffer. I will work with our community based organizations, small businesses, labor groups, and environmentalists to accelerate planned projects to ensure job growth and work force development are top priorities.
I believe we must develop and support city policies and practices that promote healthy communities. This includes supporting our community based hospitals, St. Luke's and San Francisco General, our community clinics and our Healthy Families Program. We need to support programs like SF CARD that work to increase the capacity of our community organizations and churches to respond during a disaster and train our residents to develop personal preparedness plans. We need to encourage a culture of preparedness so that the most vulnerable in our community are not left behind. Along with our diverse ethnic communities in the District, the LGBT community continues to make its imprint in the neighborhoods. I have worked for LGBT related issues and pro LGBT candidates my entire career. I am committed to insuring that District 9 continues to grow as a model of tolerance and inclusion.
I deeply believe that District 9 can be a better place for our families. As with so many residents in District 9 who are renters, we have struggled to meet the daily challenges of raising a family and maintaining a viable economic life in San Francisco. I believe my experiences allow me to understand the priorities and plights of District 9 residents and families, and I am committed to making life better for them.
I could not have made the decision to run without the encouragement of my family. My husband Gene and I have four children Lisa, Robert, Elena and Miguel. Lisa, our oldest, is a Professor of Comparative Literature at St. Edwards College in Austin Texas; my daughter Elena is a counselor at Glen Park School and Miguel is a sound engineer and Judo Instructor. We have 5 grandchildren, Cassandra 15, Emile 4, Antonio 6, Miguel Jr. 5, and Robert Jr. 5.
I want to make District 9 a place that supports its entire population - that helps its small business owners, workers and all families. I am asking you for your help to achieve this vision. Ideally, I would like to secure your endorsement, your time and your money. The maximum financial contribution is $500 and you are not required to be a resident of District 9 to be a donor. Your donation of $25, $50, $75, $100 or $500 will help me raise the funds to launch my campaign. Please make your check out to Eva Royale for Supervisor and mail to: 60 - 29th Street #304, San Francisco, CA 94110.
Thank you for your friendship and support,

Eva Royale, Candidate for Supervisor, District 9
